When you will be spending three or four years writing about the Liberty ships of World War 2, you don't pass up an opportunity to visit one of the only two remaining floating Liberty ships in the country. There's the SS Jeremiah O'Brien in San Francisco and the SS John W. Brown in Baltimore. On a research trip to visit the National Archives, I was lucky to get a personalized tour of the John Brown ship. I write about the tour in my book, but it was an amazing experience just walking on board, standing in the wheelhouse, walking down into the bowels of the ship, touring the rooms where the Merchant Marines slept. It felt like I had stepped back into history.
